Impact Of Urbanization On Bird Behavior And Diversity In Ranchi, India

Urbanization presents significant challenges to avian communities, affecting their behavioral ecology, population
structure, and ecological niches. This empirical study investigates the behavioral patterns of bird populations across
varying degrees of urbanization in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. Through systematic field surveys conducted over twelve
months (March 2023–February 2024), we documented 1,247 bird observations across five distinct study sites
representing urban, peri-urban, and rural habitats. We employed point count methodology, behavioral observation
protocols, and habitat characterization to assess species richness, abundance, diversity, and behavioral plasticity.
Our findings reveal significant variation in avian community composition across urbanization gradients. Urban areas
exhibited 28% lower species richness compared to rural habitats, while behavioral changes including altered foraging
strategies, modified vocalization patterns, and reduced nesting success were prominent in urban populations. Shannon
diversity index values ranged from 2.14 in urban zones to 3.67 in rural habitats, indicating substantial ecological
degradation. Notably, 15 species demonstrated behavioral plasticity through diet modification and temporal activity
shifts. Logistic regression analysis identified habitat fragmentation, noise pollution, and reduced vegetation density
as principal drivers of these behavioral modifications (p<0.05). These findings emphasize the urgent need for
evidence-based urban planning and establishment of ecological corridors to mitigate negative impacts on avian fauna.
This research contributes to understanding how rapidly changing urban environments shape evolutionary and
ecological responses in bird populations, with implications for biodiversity conservation in developing countries.
